Yes Giantess Electro Pop at CMJ

Modern Rock Column

October 27, 2009

In a sea of Rock and layers of Electronica, sometimes there’s a little glimmer of Bubble Gum goodness at CMJ. Though the expectations are high for deeper meaning or complex musical arrangements when there’s over 1,200 bands battling for attention, sometimes it’s that simple, catchy Pop band that stands out. Yes Giantess have that spark of fun, innocent playfulness that translates.

The fresh-faced foursome produces 80s video game-like music that might have been the soundtrack to one of those teen shows or maybe Kids Incorporated. It is hugely danceable and joyful and the four are having so much fun in their flannel plaids playing low-fi synth sounds and bouncing to the steady beats that even the worst naysayer wants to cut a rug.

Yes Giantess isn’t afraid of boyish vocals a la the Jonas Brothers. On the contrary, they sing them loud and proud. Occassionally, there’s an infusion of darker, dirtier beats that add a shade of depth and enough bad boy atmosphere to make it late night dance club fodder. They say, “Girl,” enough times in the lyrics to make everyone in the audience think they might just be that girl and probably a lot of them wish they were. Despite each of the four being in their own world hunched over various beat-producing instruments, they come together for live, in-sync hand-clapping at the end of, “You Were Young,” which is just the perfect cherry on their caramel, banana, marshamallow fluff sundae.
