Crystal Castles shake the ground with danceable performance art

It was a busy summer for Toronto electronica duo-turned-trio Crystal Castles. As has been the case for the last couple of years, they pounded their way through an impressive number of summer festivals, shows and after parties, the last of which was the elite All Tomorrow’s Parties (ATP) fest in the Catskills.

Live drums have added another layer of decibals to their already thumping, brain-shaking music. Audiences stand in awe of their sound at some points, while getting caught up in the dance beats and samples at others. Part of their appeal is their ability to cross genres and assemble audiences that are equal parts goth, rave, dance and alternative. They’ve entertained diverse audiences from touring with Nine Inch Nails, supporting Blur, playing festivals and headlining their own shows.

But, their success is about more than music, it’s an aura. Alice Glass’ style and on-stage persona are a big part of the appeal. Her style could lean heavily goth, except for the addition of white Chuck Taylors and the occasional mini-skirt. Her stage tricks have included climbing the equipment and destroying the instruments. But her mystery adds to the interest. Alice Glass isn’t trying to impress with emotion or lyrical prowess, but rather with her ability to make her voice another digital instrument and create an alternate world. If there are lyrics, they’re lost in the overall sound and that seems to be the point.

Crystal Castles live show is an experience more than a music showcase. The hypnotic, brutal beats assault the audience and draw them in at the same time. They’re sending out a chaotic, aggressive rave spirit that somehow finds a home in all kinds of environments.
